Isla Holbox is a car-free sandbar at the northern tip of Quintana Roo, famous for its summer whale-shark season, flamingos and bioluminescent water. There is no bridge: every visitor arrives by boat across the Yalahau lagoon. The usual route is to drive or shuttle to the mainland village of Chiquilá and cross on the passenger ferry, a trip of about 25 minutes. From Cancun and Playa del Carmen you can reach Chiquilá by road in roughly two to three hours, or skip the drive entirely with a short charter flight into the island's airstrip. Once on Holbox, golf-cart taxis and small boats handle the rest.
